Chuck Berg Jazz Biography
Chuck Berg wears several hats. As an academic, he’s Professor of Film/Media Studies in the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Kansas. As a jazz critic, Chuck’s commentaries have appeared in JazzTimes, DownBeat, Jazz Educators Journal, American Music, Coda, Kansas City Star and the Topeka Capital-Journal. His liner notes have accompanied numerous albums by prominent jazz artists including Coleman Hawkins, Jay McShann, Claude “Fiddler” Williams, Eric Dolphy, Art Pepper, Marian McPartland, Keith Jarrett, Dave Liebman, Fred Hersch and Lee Ritenour. With Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach, Chuck co-authored the influential Lookout Farm: A Case Study of Improvisation for Small Jazz Group. He is a contributor to The Oxford Companion to Jazz, The Gramophone Guide to CD Jazz, and The All Music Guide to Jazz. His latest book is The Encyclopedia of Orson Welles (2003). Chuck is a voting member of NARAS (the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences, which presents the Grammy Awards), and serves as chair of Film & Video for the International Association of Jazz Educators. When not teaching or writing, Chuck – who’s shared bandstands with musicians ranging from Roy Eldridge to Maynard Ferguson -- moonlights as a jazz saxophonist/flutist.
